Women’s Bodies, Women Wisdom is an illuminating book by Christiane Northrop, M.D., published in 1994. Many moons ago I bought this book thinking I would read the sections that seemed relevant to me. In the end, I actually sat down and read it cover to cover. I hardly expected it to be a page-turner that would forever change my relationship to my body and its signals. I learned how thoughts, beliefs and emotions can have organ-specific consequences and which ones can promote health and well-being; why my own intuitive understanding of my body is as important as my doctor’s assessment; why prescribing medicine or recommending surgery for a health concern is only one of many possible options . . . and much, much more! Holistic physician Northrup explores the mind/body connection from a personal, entirely female perspective. She presents the facts about the female body, its strengths and illnesses and its complex trajectory from infancy to old age, in a clear, intelligent and caring way. She teaches us to look deep inside ourselves and heal the emotional scars that contribute to physical problems. And finally, Northrup shows ways to change the attitudes that created those scars.
“A masterpiece for every woman who has an interest in her body, her mind, and her soul.”—Caroline Myss, Ph.D., author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts.
