Maleficent is a 2014 American dark fantasy directed by Robert Stromberg from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton. Starring Angelina Jolie as the eponymous Disney villainess character, the film is a live-action re-imagining of Walt Disney’s 1959 animated film Sleeping Beauty and portrays the story from the perspective of the antagonist, Maleficent. This is a brilliant, feminist exploration of the cycle of violence. It is an intimate portrayal of “evil” as a manifestation of trauma and its aftermath, post-traumatic stress, rather than a finite, immutable negative power. The artistic team first explores the impact of betrayal and violation on a young, trusting, loving and magical creature and then takes us through the journey of healing and transformation that empowers her to heal not only herself but also her community. I highly recommend it for girls, boys and adults alike.
